Welcome to bibliospace

Bibliospace invites you to read locally by connecting with authors in your Ontario community.

This site is designed to bring readers, book clubs, libraries, schools, and community groups together with writers in their towns and cities. You will find independent, self-published and small press writers on this site, all waiting to be discovered.

Supporting Independent and Local Authors

Independent, self-published authors are increasing in numbers as the publishing industry changes. Where once the only way to get a book published was to send out submissions to publishers and hope for the best, new technologies have made it easy for all writers to publish a book.

Some may question the quality of a self-published book, assuming it is not good enough for a “real” publisher, but that attitude is changing along with the publishing industry. The reality is that few big publishers are willing to take a chance on a new author, and smaller publishing houses lack the resources to publish more than a few titles per year. Self-publishing fills the gap and allows new voices to be heard. (Read one writer’s opinion on self-publishing here.)

Just like an indie band that hasn’t yet been discovered, indie and small press authors produce work of quality and ingenuity. All they need is for someone to find them, and that is the reason for bibliospace.

I think people will be pleasantly surprised by the writing talent in their own town or city—they just need to know where to find that talent.–Crystal Smith, creator of bibliospace

Using bibliospace

Click the tags in the Books by Genre section in the right sidebar to see what piques your interest.

On our Authors page you can:

  • Search our alphabetical directory of authors to find independent and local authors you know already.
  • Use our speakers’ bureau to find an author in your community to speak at your next community event, book club meeting, or in your class at school.
  • Learn more about bibliospace events and read recent news items.

Submitting Your Book

If you are an author, you can submit your book to bibliospace at no charge.  Follow the link on our Authors page to learn more.

While we encourage people to shop locally for books at their neighbourhood bookseller, authors whose books are available for sale on amazon.ca are included on the Bookstore page, making it easy for bibliospace visitors to purchase the books they find on this site.

Bibliospace’s initial focus was writers in communities west of Toronto—Oakville, Burlington, Milton, Mississauga, Orangeville, and other cities and towns in Halton and Peel Regions—but we have expanded to welcome books from writers across Ontario.

Thanks for stopping by and have fun discovering new writing talent on the pages of bibliospace!

Hi. Thanks so much for your kind words! I hope this idea takes off because I know there are a lot of writers out there with great books but with little or no publicity budget. Good luck with your book. If you need any advice on publishing and marketing, check some of the links in the sidebar.

There are few northern Ontario publishers. Is it possible to submit to this site and make it Ontario-wide?
    Thank you

Absolutely! I started this site with the thought that I would focus on the Greater Toronto Area. When I realized I had more interest from outside that region, I started expanding slowly to other areas in the south, but I would love to have authors from all over the province using this site for promotions.

I passed this info on to my local bookstore that is a fabulous promoter of ‘read local’. This is very cool.

Thanks so much! The authors here cover some fascinating subjects. I greatly appreciate you spreading the word!

Just changed the Home and About pages to say “Ontario” instead of just the south. Will update the media kit soon too.

I am a published author, but have just self-published three books as ebooks and print on demand books. They are available on amazon.com and will soon be available on chapters.indigo.ca. Am I eligible to submit these three self-published books to your program?

    Thanks.

    Crystal
Congratulations on the creation of such a great site! You will undoubtedly provide many disillusioned self published authors with the light that will help them traverse that long dark tunnel of self promotion.
I will be sharing your site info with as many local establishments, readers and authors as possible.
